The museum of moder art in San Francisco has displayed a number of different expositions over the years. From Van Gough to the most recent expo of Frida Kahlo, MOMA has been the place to go to experience any type of art wit no boundaries. MOMA has had expositions with artists from all over the world. This is a chance for people to taste a little bit of the culture of a foreign place through the art and expression of the artist.

Contains the following "analytical elements":
Observation: What did you choose? What do you see or hear or feel or think of in the choice you made? What is the subject of the work? If you chose a 'thing' what is the work made of and what techniques (colors, lines, shapes, textures)does the creator use? Be specific in your description. If you chose a place, be specific in your description of what you see or hear. Talk to your reader as though they cannot see the item but somehow must draw a painting of what you see or hear. 1 point

When you enter MOMA with its immensely high ceiling and constant crowd of people it is like entering a different world. It has six floors of art with anything from contemporary photographers of the early 1900's to indigenous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. It is almost too much to bear taking it floor by floor and trying to see and absorb everything in one visit. The crowd of people does not make it very easy to maneuver around without running into people occasionally. The high ceilings allow for echos of occasional shrieks but for the most part people are quite and just look at the piece trying to figure out what it all means. Some rooms are darker than others and some more crowded than others. The pieces range anywhere from tiny to full walls of canvas stretched out along wide white walls. People migrate like cattle from one painting to another in silence except for the occasional whisper. The whole experience is calming and refreshing.

Interpretation: What is your choice about? Give specific examples to support this statement in 2 sentences; do so in a way that teaches us something about your choice. Make Paulo Freire proud! .75 point

My choice is based on what I have been exposed to and can describe from personal memory. I am completely comfortable describing the atmosphere of MOMA because I have been there many times and enjoy it thoroughly. Every time I go I learn something new and am exposed to a new artist that I had never heard of before.

Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5 point

I have not been to many museums and so my choice was quite simple. I hope to have more exposure in the future to more museums and more cultures as well.

Questioning: What else would you like to know about this choice? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. Example: I learned that John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath was based on his personal experience working with farm workers. I would like to know if the characters he used in that book are fictitious or are they people he met? .5 point

I learned that MOMA has had hundreds of expositions with hundreds of different artists over the year. I would like to know who the first artist to ever be displayed at MOMA was?

5. Using your classmates work from last week, tell us one thing you learned from 1 student. Is this one thing some common experience you share or some experience that is completely different than what you experienced? Is this one thing related to our class theoretical foundation and if so, how? Is that one thing related to historical or cultural context of this country or a different one? I chose to look at Christopher Allen's 2A project in which he describes the city of Santa Clara and why it is one of the most important cities in our state of California. Although it's population is only about 100,000 people Santa Clara has accomplished many things. It is responsible for many advancements in computer and technology. I have personally never been to Santa Clara but it is very surprising to me that such a small city has produced so much for the rest of California. The city though small is very diverse. In my opinion diversity is the key to succeed and so i believe that this city is a perfect example of why together we succeed. If you put different experiences and opinions together the outcome is positive.

San Francisco is one of the few large cities i have ever been too. Like any city it is a diverse collection of different people from all over the world. People interact at the local colleges and the tourist attractions like the golden gate bridge. The city of San Francisco connects to our study of humanities in that it is a great representation of a melting pot of culture and it is virtually in our back yard.

Observation: What did you choose? What do you see or hear or feel or think of in the choice you made? What is the subject of the work? If you chose a 'thing' what is the work made of and what techniques (colors, lines, shapes, textures)does the creator use? Be specific in your description. I chose the city of San Francisco because it is the closest city and also a great representation of California culture. San Francisco is a wonderful city where you can go and divulge in any culture you wish. You can go to china town and experience authentic Chinese cuisine with an aroma the fills the air. You can also take a fairy to Alcatraz island and walk through a staple of San Francisco's and experience the history of the city. You can go down to Haight Ashbury street and walk around and see all the tattoo shops and different alternative shops that it has to offer. Along with different locations San Francisco has the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge which covers the bay and links northern California to "the City" as we call it.

Interpretation: What is your choice about? Give specific examples to support this statement in 2 sentences; do so in a way that teaches us something about your choice. Make Paulo Freire proud! .75 point

San Francisco can be an easy escape from cows and farms but for me it is a taste of the many cities i have never visited and would like to. In the future I would like to experience staying and maybe living in San Francisco.

Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5 point

San Francisco has much to offer and a variety of ways to do it in. From the best shopping to the best food. I was led to this choice because i have not been to many other places in California that truly embodied what the culture of California is really like. San Francisco by far is the most fast pace diverse city within California that i can think of. The choice of a place in California was pretty obvious to me of what place to chose because as i said i have not visited many places or experienced them to the extent that i have San Francisco.

Questioning: What else would you like to know about this choice? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. I learned that San Francisco is the largest city in California. I would like to know how it compares to other well know cities in the United States.

I chose to look at Ross Lemly's 1C project on Paulo Freire. One new thing that i learned was that Paulo was very close to his students and often repeated the phrase "a teacher who learns and a learner who teaches."I have taken many classes which have been an exchange of ideas and experiences. I feel that this is the best way to truly grasp and learn a subject. This online class would be considered an exchange of ideas. We look at each others work and learn from one another. This is a collaboration or a learner teaching as Paulo would say. http://russdabus44.blogspot.com/2008/09/assignment-1c.html

As a subject i chose to look at the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo because she was an audacious and innovative artist and a proud Latina women. Frida's work was recently exibited in the museum of modern of modern art in San Francisco where i was able to experience it first hand. The culture of California has been shaped through many elements, and the Latin culture along with many other cultures have helped shape it. Artist like Frida have long helped influence the esthitic of the time.

I chose Frida Kahlo not only because she is one of my favorite realists but because she strongly represented her indigenous Mexican culture and sexuality through her art. I find her intriguing because she was particularly fearless and strong as a Mexican women and as a Mexican women myself, I appreciate her. Her most famous paintings are self portraits that reflect upon Frida's personal pain and her sexuality. Her paintings are vivid and full of emotion. When you look in her eyes you can almost read what she is thinking.
One thing that is very interesting about Frida's paintings is that she portrays herself in a completely raw and selfless manor. She paints with her heart and emotion.

Interpretation: What is your choice about? Give specific examples to support this statement in 2 sentences; do so in a way that teaches us something about your choice. Make Paulo Freire proud! .75 point

San Francisco is a city that the whole world dreams of visiting and yet we have it in our backyards, it needs to be appreciated for the beautiful treasure that it is. Frida Kahlo has moved many with her passion for art and life, not many of us have the passion and dedication which she had for her art.

Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this

way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5 point

Frida's work has brought me to tears many times because of the pain you can feel emanating from some of her pieces. Someone that passionate for their art who can express it in such a apparent way is admirable in every way. Most people have a hard time expressing their feelings to their loved ones, and this women was willing to show them to the world. She showed the world how she felt about her husband's betrayal and her inability to carry a child. I have a hard time giving people my name, much less giving them my personal information. Frida was willing to show the world exactly who she was and what she was made of.

Questioning: What else would you like to know about this choice? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. I know that Frida's art was personal representation of herself and her experiences. Her husband Diego Rivera was also a very well know muralist and i would like to know if his artwork ever influenced hers of vies verse?

I chose to look at Debbie Lee's 2B assignment. She states as part of her study of the San Francisco Asian Art Museum that "about 1/3 of the United States Asian population lives in California." I find this interesting because as i have said before one of the more astonishing things about California is that we have some many different cultures that come together to make California culture. California benifits from having many different points of view from so many different kinds of people. I would consider the idea of an exchange of ideas very relative to our theoretical foundation. According to Paulo Freire the best kind of learning and succeeding is that done in an exchange of opinions.

Assignment 1C

Debbie
1. Debbie would like to learn about the history and culture within the diversity of California.
2. A. One thing I learned about Paulo Freire from Debbie’s post is that he once taught a group of three hundred sugarcane workers how to read and write and forty five days.
B. Another interesting fact about Paulo Freire that I learned from Debbie’s post is that Paulo Freire believed that there were two main deficiencies in the educational system. One was the lack of schools for children and secondly was the poor teaching in public schools.
3. This information relates to our studies of humanities in that in all cultures education, whether formal or not, education is part of everyday life. In our culture education is an assured thing for all of our youth, but for other cultures it may be more difficult to attain a well rounded education. We are blessed in this country to have all the luxuries of free education and a lot of the times we do not value what others may treasure as a gift. The ability to read and write is a given for most people in our society. Paulo taught a group of sugarcane workers how to read and write in forty five days, learning a subject so vast in such a small amount of time is unfathomable for most Americans. Yet to other cultures this small gift gives them the opportunity to improve their lives dramatically.
Danielle
1.Danielle thinks of California as an all inclusive land. We have mountains, oceans, forests, deserts, rain, snow and sunshine. We also have quite a diverse group of people that inhabit our California.
2. A. Something I learned about Paulo Freire from Danielle’s post is that he despised the banking concept within the educational system. He believed it dehumanized not only the student but the educators as well.
B. I also learned that in Paulo’s book “The Pedagogy of the oppressed,” the first chapter is focused on the justification of the educational process in which the “oppressed” is controlled by the “oppressor.” Out of the oppression comes a fear of freedom from the “oppressed.”
3. This all relates to our study of humanities in that in order to have a functioning education system the educator has to do more that fill the learners head with bias facts and curriculum. An exchange of ideas and thoughts must occur for real learning to begin. If students are being “oppressed” they are never going to learn in a conducive and positive way. Without education cultures and humans cannot thrive.

Assignment 1B

Paulo Freire was one of the most influential educators of the twentieth century. Throughout his life Freire had many professions. He was a layer for many years as well as a protégées professor. He later became the first Director of the Department of Cultural Extension of the University of his Home Town Recife Brazil. Following the coup d’ etat, or Brazilian over through of the government, Freire was jailed and then exiled for fifteen years. During these fifteen years Freire’s more renowned work came to be, Including his book “Pedagogy of the oppressed.” During Freire’s exile he moved to Geneva Switzerland where he became the Special Educator Advisor to the world Congress of Churches. Eventually Freire was allowed to return to Brazil where he passed away in 1997 of a heart attack.

Paulo Freire was innovative in his views and opinions of education in Brazil. One of his ideas was that of “praxis,” or challenging that which is being taught. According to Paulo Freire only through dialogue and the praxis of conversation will one really learn. A student with his or hers’ own values will learn better in an interactive environment between the student and teacher. In order to have such an environment mutual respect is needed from both parties, as well as patience. This will also enhance communication skills and deepen one’s learning ability.

Paulo Freire also believed in learning based on ones’ “experience”. According to Freire education based on current issues and relative information is better understood and absorbed by the student. Freire wanted educators and students to look at certain words, which could then be applied to different things or situations in everyday life. This would allow the student to think of their surrounding environment differently as well as change the way they interact in that environment. Learning from experience would help shape the students’ consciousness. Paulo Freire’s ultimate goal was to provide all that wanted to learn with a well rounded education.
