As a subject i chose to look at the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo because she was an audacious and innovative artist and a proud Latina women. Frida's work was recently exibited in the museum of modern of modern art in San Francisco where i was able to experience it first hand. The culture of California has been shaped through many elements, and the Latin culture along with many other cultures have helped shape it. Artist like Frida have long helped influence the esthitic of the time.
Contains the following "analytical elements":
Observation: What did you choose? What do you see or hear or feel or think of in the choice you made? What is the subject of the work? If you chose a 'thing' what is the work made of and what techniques (colors, lines, shapes, textures)does the creator use? Be specific in your description. If you chose a place, be specific in your description of what you see or hear. Talk to your reader as though they cannot see the item but somehow must draw a painting of what you see or hear. 1 point
I chose Frida Kahlo not only because she is one of my favorite realists but because she strongly represented her indigenous Mexican culture and sexuality through her art. I find her intriguing because she was particularly fearless and strong as a Mexican women and as a Mexican women myself, I appreciate her. Her most famous paintings are self portraits that reflect upon Frida's personal pain and her sexuality. Her paintings are vivid and full of emotion. When you look in her eyes you can almost read what she is thinking.
One thing that is very interesting about Frida's paintings is that she portrays herself in a completely raw and selfless manor. She paints with her heart and emotion.
Interpretation: What is your choice about? Give specific examples to support this statement in 2 sentences; do so in a way that teaches us something about your choice. Make Paulo Freire proud! .75 point
San Francisco is a city that the whole world dreams of visiting and yet we have it in our backyards, it needs to be appreciated for the beautiful treasure that it is. Frida Kahlo has moved many with her passion for art and life, not many of us have the passion and dedication which she had for her art.
Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this
way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5 point
Frida's work has brought me to tears many times because of the pain you can feel emanating from some of her pieces. Someone that passionate for their art who can express it in such a apparent way is admirable in every way. Most people have a hard time expressing their feelings to their loved ones, and this women was willing to show them to the world. She showed the world how she felt about her husband's betrayal and her inability to carry a child. I have a hard time giving people my name, much less giving them my personal information. Frida was willing to show the world exactly who she was and what she was made of.
Questioning: What else would you like to know about this choice? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. Example: I learned that John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath was based on his personal experience working with farm workers. I would like to know if the characters he used in that book are fictitious or are they people he met? .5 point
I know that Frida's art was personal representation of herself and her experiences. Her husband Diego Rivera was also a very well know muralist and i would like to know if his artwork ever influenced hers of vies verse?
5. Using your classmates work from last week, tell us one thing you learned from 1 student. Is this one thing some common experience you share or some experience that is completely different than what you experienced? Is this one thing related to our class theoretical foundation and if so, how? Is that one thing related to historical or cultural context of this country or a different one? Link that persons blog to this entry (eg cut paste that blog entry here) . .5 point
I chose to look at Debbie Lee's 2B assignment. She states as part of her study of the San Francisco Asian Art Museum that "about 1/3 of the United States Asian population lives in California." I find this interesting because as i have said before one of the more astonishing things about California is that we have some many different cultures that come together to make California culture. California benifits from having many different points of view from so many different kinds of people. I would consider the idea of an exchange of ideas very relative to our theoretical foundation. According to Paulo Freire the best kind of learning and succeeding is that done in an exchange of opinions.
