For both inland cities I chose to look at both news and videos of what goes on with the youth of the towns. Both cities have reputations the follow them based on their youth and so i focused on the younger generation for both searches. The youth of both cities represents a diverse mixture of cultures for different reasons. The subject of youth in our inland cities is important to our study of humanities in that they are our future and the future of our culture.

Contains the following elements that will be used in upcoming projects for analytical purposes:
What are some assumptions/stereotypes you think people have of each location: 1 point

There are plenty of stereotypes for both these locations. Some of which I encountered in my searches of both media and entertainment for both. Some of the main stereotypes for Fresno is that they have an abundance of gang violence mainly because of the high Latin population. People assume than in being diverse and a melting pot of cultures this is direct correlation to the violence that any one city endures. Some of the stereotypes for Chico are that only college students or beer factory workers live there. When in fact Chico has plenty of residents that do not part take in either thing. Some of the assumptions about Chico are that because the are what one would refer to as a "college town", it is run and controlled by its youth.

List 3 things that make each location similar: 1 point

1. The obvious similarity is that both cities are in the state of California and do not touch any ocean. They are inland cities hence the title of this project.

2. Both cities are in what is referred to as The Greater San Gaquine valley. That means that both cities are geographically speaking very close to eachother.

3. Both cities have very high temperatures during the summer time reaching well into the hundreths. Reason being that although Chico has a higher elevation both cities recieve the rath of California summers.

List 3 things that make each location so different: 1 point

1. Chico California has a population of 105,975 and Fresno California has a population of 486,971. Therefore there is definitly variation in the population size of both cities.

2. Fresno has a high population of farmers and farm workers while Chico has a high population of students and also factories and factory workers.

3. Fresno California has a Latin population of 39.99% and Chico has a Latin population of only 12.1%.

Questioning: What else would you like to know about these places? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. .5 point

A riot recently broke out amongst Chico State students that called for police enforcment and aid, yet Fresno California has a worse reputation for violence and chaos. Is it because the Latin population is higher and therefore an excuse for people to stereotype Fresno?

5. Using your classmates work from last week, tell us one thing you learned from 1 student. Is this one thing some common experience you share or some experience that is completely different than what you experienced? Is this one thing related to our class theoretical foundation and if so, how? Is that one thing related to historical or cultural context of this country or a different one? I looked at Christina Topanga's 3B project on two different beaches in California. She makes a great point that California's beaches are very important in part because this aspect of California is how it is recognized by the rest of the country. We are viewed as beach going, surfing, tan blond people, when in reality i can not even swim. I have gone to other states and other countries where I have definitly experienced this stereotype from other people. This is definitly related to our class foundation because we as a state make up our own culture but in a sense what others think of us also defines us as a culture.

For both searches I looked at both videos and news websites. The videos i watched are mainly videos taken by regular people to show the world what the lives of most Californians are like. Most people in California are no further than two hours from the beach. This pertains to our study of Humanities because California is it's own culture. The culture of those lucky enough to enjoy the beauty of the ocean.

What are some assumptions/stereotypes you think people have of each location: 1 point

There are many assumptions that others have about California and our beaches. People believe that we are all blond surfers and that we all live surrounded with movie stars. Our beaches have alot to do with our attraction to other people. People from northern California believe that every beach in southern California is warm and swimable. People from southern California believe that all northern California beaches are cold and fridgid. For the most part these assumptions are right. In the videos of both beaches you can tell the difference between the weather at both beaches.

List 3 things that make each location similar: 1 point

1. Both locations are beaches that consist of sand and salt water meeting. Both locations meet up to the Pacific Ocean.

2. Both beaches are considered state beaches. They are protected under the law as a state park.

3. Both locations are tourists attractions and therefore have a constant flow of people that want to visit. San Diego is a huge beach town that is very popular and Bodega bay contains a number of hotels and tourist attractions.

List 3 things that make each location so different: 1 point

1. The weather is the most obvious difference between Goatrock and San Diego beach. Southern California beaches are much warmer than northern California beaches. Northern california beaches are rarely the types of beaches one would want to swim in. While southern California beaches are warm and inviting.

2. The water temperature also vary dramatically between both beaches. During the summer San Diego beaches' water can reach 70 degrees and seldom drop below 57 degrees in winter. Northern California beaches' wather range from 40 degrees in winter to 57 degrees in summer.

3. The landscape is the last difference between both beaches. San Diego beach has a smooth surface and no real rocky areas. Northern California goatrock beach has a very rocky ans sharp landscape, consistant with the name goatrock.

Questioning: What else would you like to know about these places? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. .5 point

San Diego beach has two times the number of shark attacks as northern California beaches. Is the difference because of the amount of swimmers in one beach verses the other?

5. Using your classmates work from last week, tell us one thing you learned from 1 student. I chose to look at Nicolette's study and comparison of Los Angeles and San Francisco. One commonality between both cities that Nicolette pointed out is that both cities were at one point settled by the Spanish. This relates to our study of humanities in that both cities are large influencial cities in California. The culture of California has largely been influenced by many different cultures and groups. In my family we are mestisos which means tht we are a blend of Mexican Spanish alot like many Mexicans. This fact has influenced my family just as California has been influenced by the settlement of both these cities.

3. Contains an explanation regarding how this component (any aspect of it; eg content of videos, content of websites) connects to your study of humanities. .25 point

In my study I chose to look at news videos on both Oakland and Berkeley. Even though both cities are right next to each other and geographically very close to each other, they vary dramatically in news and issues. While the news cast on Berkeley I witnessed was mainly on protesting, Oakland's news cast was on a drive-by shooting at a local mall. I also looked at a news paper from both cities. News papers as well as the news from both cities are the way that people receive their information. That is how people find out what is going on in their cities as well as in the world. This relates to our study of humanities in that these communities depend on news to inform them of important issues or events.

4. Contains the following elements that will be used in upcoming projects for analytical purposes:
a. What are some assumptions/stereotypes you think people have of each location: 1 point

There are many assumptions when it comes to both cities. For example when watching the news video on a drive-by shooting in Oakland, I imagined that this is a regular occurrence for Oakland residents. The assumptions that surround the city of Oakland are that it is a dangerous and volatile city. I watch the news every night and it seems like more often than not, Oakland is portrayed in a negative way, mainly because of the amount of crime in the city. For Berkeley most of the news tends to have to do with their infamous California University of Berkeley. When you think of Berkeley that is the first thing you think of. You assume that everyone in the city is either educated or working to get educated. But we forget about the others in the city which have lived their for many generations and for whom the school is just a part of the scenery. The stereotypes regarding both cities are dramatically different even though both cities are really close to each other. The people of Berkeley are educated and the people of Oakland are dangerous.

b. List 3 things that make each location similar: 1 point

1. For starters the cities are only separated only by about five miles of road. They are so close that I was once lost in Berkeley and before I knew it i was in Oakland.

2. Both cities are very culturally diverse. They both have a number of different cultures that inhabit and thrive in them.

3. Both cities are some of the largest cities within our California. Underneath San Francisco and Los Angeles both Oakland and Berkeley are relatively large well known cities.

c. List 3 things that make each location so different: 1 point

1. Crime rates are drastically different between both cities. While Oakland has already reached its one hundredth murder, Berkeley is at about fifteen and varies according to different sources.

2. Berkeley and Oakland have many events that work to bring their residents together, one event is the annual Berkeley Kite festival. Oakland has its annual Fine arts festival.

3.In August 2008 Oakland's unemployment rate was 10.5% and Berkeley's was 2.3%. This difference is huge when you take into consideration the population of both of these cities.

d. Questioning: What else would you like to know about these places? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. .5 point

During the 2006-2007 school year an estimated eleven percent of Oakland's high school students dropped out, that is the highest in the whole state of California. I would like to know why the high school drop out rate is so much higher in the city of Oakland than any other city?

I chose to look at Samantha Patterson's 2c project. She chose to look at the subject of different languages used within the state of California. This is something I can completely relate to because I grew up in a home where we spoke Spanish as a primary language. I chose to study French extensively in high school and college because I have always had a personal interest in languages. I believe that the diversity of languages used in California are very important and very interrelated to our study of humanities. The diversity of all the different languages used in California represents the collaboration of all the cultures in California. All the cultures in California makes California what it is.
